Read More	Le Petit Courrier, 24 Feb1937, p. 3 (translated): Marc Surette – 1844 – 1937 (Direct Descendant of the Founders of Surette's Island) The Mission of Surette's Island just lost its oldest parishioner in the person of Marc Surette who died Tuesday, 16 February at the age of 93 years and one month, and was born 8 January 1844. Marc Surette, very young still, like the young people of his time, took the craft of the sea, which he continued until the beginning of the 19th century. From then on he became a farmer and continued with that occupation until the death of his wife, Angelique Surette, on 28 March 1929 at the age of 85 years and three months. It was then that he retired to the home of his son, Romain Surette, of Morris Island, where he died last week. His kind and happy character made him a pleasant old man to meet. He was loved by both young and old. During the last years of his life, he enjoyed playing cards and checkers with his grandsons and granddaughters and telling them stories "d'en premier." Gifted with very strong health, Marc was never sick. On his deathbed, where the flu and old age had placed him, he boasted at the age of 93 that he had never needed to consult a doctor, and said it was now too late to do so. He leaves to mourn four sons and two daughters: Romain of Morris Island, Arthur of Surette's Island, Albert of Yarmouth, Ludger of Gloucester, Mass., Mrs. Agnes Surette of Surette's Island, and Mrs. Leander Surette of Malden, Mass. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday, 9 February, at 9:00 in the morning at St. Joseph's Church. Fr. L. Surette, priest, sang the burial mass and performed the funeral service. Serving him as porters were four of his grandsons: Alvenie Surette, Pierre Arthur Surette, Marc Alfred Surette and Marc Albert Surette. The death of this venerable old man ends the third generation, since the Acadian Deportation of 1755, in this village. Marc Surette was the son of Jean Surette and Marie Saulnier, daughter of Joseph Saulnier of Clare. Jean Surette, in turn, was the eldest son of Charles Baromé Surette and Marie Babin. The latter, together with his brother Frederic, were the first two to establish themselves permanently in Surette's Island, and it is from them that the majority of the population of this village now descend.
