"Mark" Clayton was the son of William Laird Claton and Margaret E. Milhouse, both natives of Indiana. He is descended on his father's paternal side from the Clatons of Manchester, England, who came to the United States sometime in the mid-1700's. "Mark" Clayton was the son of William Laird Claton and Margaret E. Milhouse, both natives of Indiana. He is descended on his father's paternal side from the Clatons of Manchester, England, who came to the United States sometime in the mid-1700's. On his father's maternal side, the Lairds, his ancestry is Scottish, originally from Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. The Lairds came to America through Nova Scotia in the early 1800s. Although born in Indiana, by 1880 his family is in Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa. In 1894, he married Caroline "Carrie" Louise Felker, also of Indiana. Together they had at least 8 children, but we do not know the names of several of them, due to early deaths. Dora Eliabeth, 1897 Webster C., 1899 Clara L., 1901 Ruth, 1904 Lester Warren, 1914 In 1900 and 1910, the family is living in Nebraska, first in Dawson County and then Brown County. In 1920 they have shifted to Benewah County Idaho. In 1930, they are in Snohomish County, Washington. In all the available records, Marcus is working as a farmer. His wife, Carrie, died in 1943, with Marcus following her a few years later in 1948.
