Funeral services were Monday, September 10, 2012 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church with Pastor Benjamin Radtke officiating. Music was furnished by Sharon Renner as soloist and Karen Livingston as organist. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Pallbearers included Mardella's grandchildren, Loren and Ingrid Lebert, Eric and Michael Johnson; her nephew, Jerry Opsahl, her brother, Merle Schnackenberg, her son-in-law, Roger Johnson and her brother-in-law, Cliff Rindels. Mardella Carol Lebert was born on December 11, 1923 to Ernie and Anita (Landon) Schnackenberg at Watertown, SD. She grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School. On December 28, 1941 she married Vernon Lebert in the First United Methodist Church in Watertown. Less than a year after their marriage, Vernon was inducted into the Army Air Corps and served for three years. Upon his return, Mardella became a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Vernon passed away on May 27, 1996. Mardella became a resident of Jenkins Living Center in May of 2006. Mardella's parents had a dance band in their early years and taught many of their 10 children to play a musical instrument. Mardella became proficient on the tenor saxophone by the time she was seven. She was always proud to have been in "Carey's Marching Band" already at that young age. She went on to play in the Church Sunday School Orchestra and another "all girl" dance band. Her adult years found her completely happy in the role of wife and homemaker. Her life became totally centered around family. Mardella came to enjoy all kinds of needlework and knitting; loved reading religious and philosophical literature; took many family vacations throughout the U.S. and Europe; and always looked forward to traveling and playing board games with her children and grandchildren. While her son Ron was a POW, she became very active in supporting the Vietnam POW Campaign, Finally, during her six year residence at the Jenkins Living Center, Mardella became a shrewd and expert Chinese Checkers player. Despite life's trials and tribulations, she always had the belief that "this too will pass" and maintained a friendly smile and sunny disposition. Mardella was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Reita Graham and Rilla Wright; and four brothers, Ed, Harry, Ben and Dale Schnackenberg. She is survived by her children, Ron (Kirstin Lefholz) Lebert of Waubay, SD and Washington, DC, and Nancy (Roger) Johnson of Lenexa, KS; four grandchildren; two sisters, Kinnye Opsahl of Aberdeen, SD, and Beth (Cliff) Rindels of Brookings, SD; and her brother, Merle (Marlys) Schnackenberg of Greisham, OR. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SJW # 46933521 provided links to parents. 8-14-2018
