This sister of Anne Hannebalsdatter resided in Spring Grove, Minnesota in 1866 where she provided temporary refuge for Merit Hansdatter, her husband, Hans Anderson, and their infant son, Adolph, upon their arrival in the United States in the spring of that year. Merit's older sister, Maren Hansdatter of Skinnrud, Norway emigrated to the United States four years later on May 14, 1870. Accompanying her were four of her seven children: daughter Karen Severtsdatter, age 22; youngest son Andreas Severtsen, age 12; and her two youngest daughters, Mathea, age 12, and Helene Severtsdatter, age 10. Maren packed her belongings for the trip in bright red wooden trunks. They were addressed to "Marn Hansdatter, Skinner P.O., Green County, Wisconsin, Nort America." One of the trunks is pictured. Maren Hansdatter was the widow of Severt Olsen who drowned in a fishing accident near Arnesveen, Norway on August 29, 1862. According to his obituary, "He left nothing of value. Therefore there was no probate." All seven of the children of Maren Hansdatter and Severt Olsen emigrated to the United States. Eldest daughter, Anna, emigrated first, sailing for New York City on June 9, 1866 at the age of 25. Eldest son, Hans, emigrated a year later. The date of daughter, Agnethe's emigration is unknown. Upon her arrival in the United States daughter Anna was retained by a widower, Ellef Johnson of Jordan, Wisconsin, for the purpose of caring for his small children. He soon proposed marriage. Anna accepted the proposal conditioned upon Ellef's agreement to provide passage for her widowed mother and younger brothers and sisters from Norway to Wisconsin. The two were married on November 15, 1868. Ellef and Anna Johnson had six children. Ellen, the youngest, was born on new Year's Eve in 1880. Anna died four days later. Sisters Mathea and Helene Severtsdatter married brothers, Frederic and George Henry Flinn. The two couples, along with Maren Hansdatter, mother of the wives, relocated from Wisconsin to Cerro Gordo County, Iowa where members of the family continue to reside. Maren died there on March 9, 1895 and is buried near the village of Rockwell.
