The following story is of Margaret Dillon of Saint Mary's Parish, Lincoln, Nebraska. She is the daughter of Patrick Dillon and Annie (Flynn) Dillon. She is shown in a picture, which has faded, with some of the gifts that she received on her 90th birthday, September 6, 1985. Margaret is one of the few natives of Lancaster County who can remember some of the activities of the seven bishops of the Diocese of Lincoln. She was fifteen years old when Bishop Thomas A. Bonacum, the first Bishop of Lincoln, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation in Saint Patrick's Church on November 10, 1910. Margaret was one of a class of eleven to receive the strengthening grace of the Holy Spirit. Margaret was born on a farm near Davey on September 6, 1895. Her parents, Patrick Dillon and Ann Flynn, were natives of Ireland who came to the United States as youngsters. They met in Dubuque and were married in that city. Patrick Dillon was acquainted with the Trappists at Mount Melleray in Ireland. One of the first places that he visited in Iowa was the monastery that the Trappists had established about twelve miles from Dubuque, which they named New Melleray. Since the monks were cloistered, they needed help in marketing the products from their 1700-acre farm. Accordingly, they employed Patrick Dillon. One of his jobs was to take the livestock to the market in Omaha. After his marriage, Patrick decided that the place most conducive for the desirable development of a family was the farm. He succeeded in getting some land near Davey where there was sufficient work for six sons and 3 daughters. Their parish church, known as Saint Patrick's in Rock Creek was located about two miles north of Davey. Margaret has many pleasant memories associated with that church. She was a member of the choir and recalls those special events when she was privileged to sing a solo. The organists were Alice Davey Downing and Dan Mara. The social events were sponsored by the Altar Society. This group sponsored bazaars and supper dances. The music for the dances was furnished by William Condon, a violinist, and Margaret Rader, the pianist. There were no dances during advent and lent. The non-Catholics in Ceresco, who attended the dances, would frequently ask when the season of penance would end so that they could resume their dances. After the railroad was built through Davey and the town was established, many people settled in the town and others south of the town. Eventually Saint Mary Church was built in Davey. Gradually the two parishes of Saint Patrick's and Saint Mary's were united into one parish. Saint Patrick's was officially closed in 1924. Margaret was a member of Saint Mary's in Davey until she moved to Lincoln. Margaret is very interested in her nieces and nephews with justifiable pride. She shows pictures of her two grand nephews, who are priest. Father Jerome Dillon is a Chaplain in the United States Navy, and Father Daniel Shea is Chaplain at Mount Carrol College in Helena, Montana.
