Description	:	Taken from the Athens Messenger Obituary: Mrs. McGraner earned her title "The Magazine Lady" for her work during World War II when she distributed thousands of magazines, playing cards, post cards and other items to servicemen aboard troop trains passing through Athens. She lived near the railroad station and with her husband, Ernest, collected magazines for soldiers on the first trains to stop after Pearl Harbor. When her work became known, residents, organizations, businesses and schools aided her in buying magazines for soldiers. She met every troop train, sometimes as many as 14 or 15 a day. ... She lived near the railroad station and with her husband, Ernest, collected magazines for soldiers on the first trains to stop after Pearl Harbor. When her work became known, residents, organizations, businesses and schools aided her in buying magazines for soldiers. She met every troop train, sometimes as many as 14 or 15 a day. Mrs. McGraner left her home at all hours, in all kinds of weather to meet the trains and distribute the magazines, cards and post cards. She often spoke of meeting hospital trains that carried wounded boys she had met when they were in Athens en route to seaports for shipment overseas. The servicemen remembered her. She received hundreds of letters of thanks from the men and their families. Mrs. McGraner's work was entered in the Congressional Records, she was featured in national publications and on coast-to-coast radio shows. Once she refused a trip to California to appear on a show because she did not want to miss any troop trains.
