June 26, 1937 - Carroll Daily Herald - A life closely intertwined with the history of Carroll came to a close when Mrs. Fred Franzwa, sr., passed away at her home, 114 South Clark street, at 3:35 o'clock Friday afternoon. She had been in ill health for the last year and in a critical condition for the past month. The body will be taken from the Gregory Funeral Home at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon to the family home on Clark street, where it will remain until the services. Rites will be held at 9 o'clock Monday morning at Ss. Peter and Paul's church, with Rev. L. Schenkelberg reading the requiem mass. Burial will be in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Franzwa, a native Iowan, was a resident of Carroll for 55 years. She was born Margaret Ales, daughter of Matthew and Catherine Ales, at Lost Nation, Ia., May 26, 1857. She lived at Lost Nation until her marriage to Fred Franzwa, which took place at St. Mary's church in Davenport on Sept. 24, 1875. The nuptial mass was read by Rev. Father Nierman. On Feb. 2, 1876, Mr. and Mrs. Franzwa came to Carroll county to make their home. They lived for awhile on a farm near Mt. Carmel before moving to Roselle and later to Halbur. From the latter place they came in 1882 to Carroll, which has been Mrs Franzwa's home ever since that time. On Sept. 24, 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Franzwa celebrated their golden wedding at their home. All of their children were with them on the memorable occasion. Mr. Franzwa passed away June 10, 1931. Mrs. Franzwa was a charter member of Ss. Peter and Paul's church, which she and her husband joined when it was erected in 1885. Throughout the years Mrs. Franzwa was an active member of the church and its different departments. She belonged to the Christian Mothers society and the Missionary society of the parish. She was also interested in the development of the St. Anthony hospital and St. Angela Academy. Another of Mrs. Franzwa's interests was the Carroll unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was a member. Mrs. Franzwa was the mother of 14 children, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are: Mathias Franzwa Tcrre Haute, Ind.; Joseph Franzwa, Eugene, Ore.; John Franzwa and Bernard Franzwa, Portland, Ore.; Edward Franzwa, Hollywood, Calif.; Henry J. Franzwa, Carroll; Fred W. Franzwa, Glidden; Mrs. S.J. Walz (Mary) and Mrs. Grant Ryer (Margaret), Los Angeles, Calif.; Miss Katherine Franzwa, at home; Mrs. C.E. Meyers (Loretta), Dunlap; and Mrs. L.B. West (Pearl), Manning. During Mrs. Franzwa's illness all of her children with the exception of her son, Joseph, who lives at Eugene, Ore., were home to visit her. All of the children within the state and Mathias Franzwa of Terre Haute, Ind., will be here for the services. Besides the sons and daughters above named, Mrs. Franzwa leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mary McNeel of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Catherine Pinter of Maquoketa, and six brothers: Peter Ales, Cedar Rapids; Simon Ales, Davenport; and John, Anthony, Mathias and Joseph Ales of Lost Nation. Her oldest brother, Nicholas, is deceased. Mrs. Franzwa is also survived by 47 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
