Mom, you are now finally free of the dialysis treatments that you so bravely endured these past several years. Margaret was born in Miles City on Dec. 12, 1919, to Charles and Evelyn Emerson, and she was sister to three brothers, Charles Hugh, George Murray and Ralph David Emerson. She loved horseback riding. Even as a young girl, she rode horseback to Medicine Rooks School. Margaret grew up around Baker and Ekalaka and attended Baker schools and the Medicine Rocks School. Her first marriage was to Donald Stanhope in 1938 at Miles City and they had six children. Margaret's second marriage was to Virgil "Bud" Shandy of Joliet in 1973. They enjoyed farming, traveling and horseback riding until his death in 1992. Margaret was no stranger to hard work nor did she shun any tasks. She was working before she left high school and every place she had lived. Just in the Billings and Joliet area, she worked at the Dude Rancher Lodge, Vaughn Ragsdale, Rockvale Restaurant and beet harvesting at Hojo's. In her later years, she also worked at the Senior Center in Joliet and helped at the La Cuesta, Rebekah Lodge's pancake breakfasts until the dialysis treatments made it difficult to work when she was in her late 70s. She was also a 4-H Club leader when she lived in Lockwood and Joliet when the children were growing up. She was a member of the Joliet VFW and Absarokee VFW and was the district head for a year. She was a lifetime member of the Murray Gray Association and a member of the knitting club. She enjoyed doing sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening and canning. The last few years, she enjoyed doing her word search puzzles and looked forward to seeing her fiends at the weekly lunch at the Joliet's Senior Center. She was always grateful for the excellent treatment she received from the staff at the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. and enjoyed chatting with the other patients. Due to the great efforts of the Staff at St. Vincent Healthcare and the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. of Billings, Margaret was able to get home, although it was for only nine hours, but it was what she wanted, and we thank them all for helping us to complete her wish. She passed away June 26, 2006, at her home near Joliet. She is survived by her six children, LaNita Leonard of Great Falls, Charles D. Stanhope (Virginia) of Joliet, Maxine Bean (Bill) of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Gerald Stanhope (Liz) of Billings, Georgia K. Van Dierendonk (Patrick) of Schertz, Texas, and Patricia Hulford (Ron) of Joliet; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Margaret was preceded in her death by her parents, Charles and Evelyn Emerson, and her three brothers. Also her ex-husband, Donald Stanhope and husband Virgil "Bud" Shandy. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel, with interment in Joliet Cemetery.
