Jennings, in this city, occurred the death of Mrs. Margaret Jennings. The deceased was the oldest native resident of the county having been born in Sugar Creek township in September, 1836, a few weeks after the arrival there of her parents who came from Indiana. Her entire life was spent in the county where she was born. The funeral services will be held Saturday at the M.E. church and the interment will be in the Rochester cemetery. STERRETT JENNINGS In the Cedar county history of 1878 we find, among the names of those who came to Cedar county in August, 1836, the following: "The Sterrett family, consisting of the mother (generally known among the settlers as "Granny" Sterrett), and three sons, Robert, William and Hector, the last two of whom were married, settled in the northeast corner of section 22, township 79, range 2." The Hector mentioned in the above was the father of Mrs. Margaret Jennings, and one month after the arrival or September 25, 1836, she was born in Sugar Creek township, Cedar county. It is generally believed that she was the first white child born in this county. She grew into womanhood in the community in which she was born, and on December 31, 1857, was married to Levi B. Jennings, who preceded her in death, September 21, 1872, almost forty years ago. To this union were born four children; three sons and one daughter. They were George T., and Earl J., who have gone on before, S.A. and Mrs. Emma Nauman, of Sugar Creek township. Three sisters also remain to mourn, Surrilda Sterrett of Tipton, Mrs. Mary J. Cory of What Cheer, and Mrs. Emma L. Smith of Butte, Mont. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church at South Bethel in 1862, and was a constant member of that church until 1897, when she removed her membership to the Methodist church of Tipton, and was a faithful member until her death. Her life was spent in the same community, until fifteen years ago, when she came to Tipton, and she and her sister, Surrilda, have been residents of this place since that time. She has been a sufferer from the dread disease cancer of the stomach for a number of years, but patient through it all. Her last severe illness of short duration, only suffering intensely about 36 hours. She died August 15, 1912, aged 75 years, 10 months and 15 days. She was one of the real pioneers, and though but a child, must have know what privations in those early days meant. She also caught some of the neighborly spirit of her childhood days and bringing it with her into our time, seemed to be happy when helping others. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, Rev. J.N. Naly preaching the sermon, after which the remains were taken to the Rochester cemetery for interment by the side of her early departed husband. She has ceased from her labors, and a good mother now rests in peace and happiness with loved ones gone before.
