Description	:	Margaret Gristy was born on June 16, 1846 in Miller, Scotland Co, Missouri, apparently the only child of Stephen and Rebecca Gristy though she did have an 0lder half brother James Woods b1842 from her mothers 1st marriage. Apparently her father re-married after her mothers death in 1855 so she had younger half brothers & sisters as well. (Her parents were 1st cousins, they having had the same grandfather in Clement Gristy b1757) Margaret spent her early years in Miller, Missouri but her father moved the family to the plains of Iowa in the mid 1860's where She met... (Her parents were 1st cousins, they having had the same grandfather in Clement Gristy b1757) Margaret spent her early years in Miller, Missouri but her father moved the family to the plains of Iowa in the mid 1860's where She met & married Adam John Stephan on June 16, 1867 in Ottumwa,Iowa.(apparently there was a Double Wedding this day as Adam's brother Philip b1844 married Margaret's cousin Rhoda Ann Gristy on the same day in June 1867) Margaret's father Stephen moved on to the Indian Nations by 1900 and died there in what is now known as Oklahoma in 1904 - quite an Adventurer obviously. Adam & Margaret had 13 children in the 25 years between 1867 and 1891. Margaret's cousin Rhoda Ann Gristy who married Adam's brother Philip lived for a time in Nesheo Co, but they lived out their final years over in Crawford Co, Kansas. Margaret passed away on January 29, 1935 in Erie, Kansas at the age of 88 and is buried here in this cemetery along with Family.(Erie is actually in Crawford Co some 12 miles from Walnut where the Cemetery is located) (Written by a Stephan grandson) Prior Entry: She was the Widow of David Shook. Margaret Gristy Shook Stephan was first wife of David Shook. His Demise: David was on his way to California ca 1866 to search for gold and was slain and scalped by Indians at Chimney Rock, Cheyenne, WY & Buried nearby. Margaret and David were married 2 Nov 1862 in Iowa. Margaret was dau of Stephen Gristy and Rebecca Gristy. She ultimately had 13 children. She died 29 Jan 1937 Erie, Neosho. Kansas Dau of: Stephen Gristy b1819 Ky and Rebecca Gristy b1825 Nelson Co. Ky. Some Add'l History: Margaret's father Stephen Gristy was married 4 times. This is an excerpt from a bio about James R Gristy, half brother to Margaret. His (James R Gristy) father was the late Stephen Gristy, who was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, in 1819. It will be recalled that Abraham Lincoln was born in the same county and Stephen Gristy as a boy was known to young Lincoln and his family. He grew up in Hardin County but in 1830 his parents removed to Brown County,Illinois. From there Stephen Gristy came with his son to Kansas in 1866 and afterwards went to Kansas City, and in 1892 to Miami, Oklahoma, where he lived until his death in 1904. He was a very successful farmer and stock raiser and should be remembered as one of the old time citizens of Kansas. He was an independent democrat and a member of the Christian Church. He was four times married as stated above. His first wife,whom he married in Brown County, Illinois, was Margaret Montgomery born in 1818 and died in Illinois in 1842 when her only son and child James R. Gristy was nine months of age. His second wife was Rebecca Woods who came from Lancaster, Missouri and died there as well. Her only child is Margaret Gristy - 0f this memorial, wife of Adam Stephens, a retired farmer living at Walnut, Kansas. The third wife was Martha Saighman who died in Hancock County, Illinois. Her two children are: Katy, wife of Raleigh Morgan, a stock farmer at Plattsburg, Missouri; and Mattie, wife of Sam G. Kelley, who was formerly a United States mail agent with the Santa Fe Railroad from 1880 until his recent retirement. He resides in Kansas City, Missouri. The fourth wife of Mr. Gristy was Lucy Brown, who died in Missouri. Her three children are: Jennie, wife of George Mehl, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Emporia; Mary, wife of S. Olney, a farmer near Waverly, Coffey County; and Stephen, who is in business at Aurora, Nebraska. The Gristy family is of Welsh descent and the first representative came to America and settled at Baltimore, Maryland during colonial days.
