There is also a small gravestone with the inscription: MARGARET B, WIFE OF BERL CARLTON. Both gravestones are pictured here on her memorial. I have left the space for Margaret's middle name blank, as I do not know for certain if her middle initial was M or B. --------------------------------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Friday, June 28, 1940: Mrs. Margaret Carlton, formerly Miss Margaret Harris of Ottumwa, died at her home in Kansas City today. Surviving are her husband, Berl Carleton [sic] daughter, Mrs. Marjory Scholtz of Atchison, Kan.; son, LaMont Brown of Kansas City; brother, Jess Harris of Chicago; sisters, Mrs. Walter Gray of Kansas City, and Mrs. Orville Howard of Ottumwa. She was preceded in death by a former husband, the Rev. Edward [sic] Brown of Ottumwa, by her parents, a son, David Brown, and a sister, Elsie. The body will arrive in Ottumwa Saturday and will be taken to the Johnson’s funeral chapel. Funeral Service Notice From “Ottumwa Courier,” Saturday;, June 29, 1940: Short funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Carlton, who died at her home in Kansas City Friday, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson funeral chapel and at 2:30 p.m. at Finley Avenue Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. John Hastie, assisted by the Rev. V.L. Currier. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ray Jacobs, Dick Van Gorp, Alva Randall, Sam Howard, O.W. Kinnear and Newman Hudson. The body will arrive over the Milwaukee railroad at 12:19 a.m. Sunday.
