April 5, 1922 - Emmetsburg Democrat - Mrs. James Hickey, one of the first settlers in our county, passed away at her home in Vernon township early Monday morning of last week. In our issue of March 29 we made mention of her passing. Although she was not able to move about much for quite a long time, she felt hearty and was strong enough to sit in her chair and converse freely with the members of her family. On Saturday she became ill and went to bed. Monday morning shortly after four o'clock, she sat up and drank a cup of tea. At 7:30 she passed away. Her rather sudden taking off was a shock to the members of her family. The funeral was held on Wednesday. Services were conducted at St. Thomas church, Rev. M. McNerney celebrating a requiem high mass. A large number of relatives, old neighbors and friends were in attendance. The burial was in the family lot in the St John cemetery. The active pall bearers were, with one exception, grandsons of the deceased. They were J.W. and J.E. Conway, W.P. McNally, L.P. Hickey, Everett Ferguson and Harold Joynt. The honorary pall hearers were Charles Nolan, James P. Conway, W.P. Coonan, B.J. Bradley, L.F.. Connan and Robert McNally. Margaret Hogan was born in the county of Meath, Ireland, March 17, 1836. Her age was eighty-six. When she was two years old her parents came to America and located in the city of Philadelphia. She was married at that place, in 1855 to James Hickey. Some time later Mr. and Mrs. Hickey came west. They lived at Elgin, Illinois for a few mouths and in the fall of 1856, located in this county. They spent the first winter in the Patrick Nolan neighborhood, at present known as Riverdale, which was the location of the original Irish colony. Mrs. Patrick McNally of this city, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hickey, was born in October, 1850. She was the first white child in this county. The following year Mr. and Mrs. Hickey located on the farm which is now the property of Patrick Jennings. About forty years ago they moved to Vernon township where they subsequently lived. Mr. Hickey was Palo Alto's first county judge. He also held other county offices during pioneer days. He died May 18, 1914. Mrs. Hickey is survived by ten sons and daughters. They are Mrs. P. McNally of this city, Michael Hickey of Sheridan, Wyoming, John, Daniel and Thomas Hickey, who live in Vernon township, Mrs. L.E. Conway, Mrs. Anthony Ruddy, Miss Alice Hickey and Mrs. H.E. Ferguson of Vernon township and Patrick Hickey of Oelwein. All were at the funeral except Michael of Sheridan, Wyoming, who could not come. There are ninety three grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Foy, the undertaker, said that there were more family relatives in the cortege than at any funeral he ever conducted. Mrs. Hickey is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Theresa Owens of Philadelphia, and three brothers — John and Daniel Hogan of Philadelphia and James Hogan of Hobart, Oklahoma. Mrs. Hickey will be remembered by the large number who knew her as one of the kind, motherly, benevolent pioneer women of our county. She was among the first home-makers of this section of the state and for sixty five years her influence for good was felt in the community life of Emmetsburg and vicinity. She was pleasant, genial and warm hearted and her generous, unaffected hospitality to strangers when our county was sparsely settled and accommodations were very limited, is well remembered by hundreds who received favors at her hands and who heartily appreciated all that she did to make them comfortable and feel at home beneath her humble roof. Her fireside was often the scene of neighborhood gatherings and there was always life and good cheer when she was present. In time of need she proved herself a helpful dependable friend and she was ever ready to promote good feeling among those with whom she mingled socially and otherwise. What a life of industry, toil, patience and solicitude she spent in the rearing a family of fourteen sons and daughters, ten of whom survive to manifest in their exemplary lives, her many maternal virtues and to cherish fondly the memory of her worthy motives and her kind deeds. She was a faithful and practical member of her church and, during the closing years of her life, spent many hours daily in prayer, humbly beseeching Providence to favor her with the spiritual blessings that are so generously bestowed on those who desire them and ask for them. We are glad when occasion requires to bestow words of well merited praise on the good men and women who built the first few homes on the wild, trackless prairies of this section of our state and who were associated year by year with every activity that contributed towards our present prosperous condition. All will, we are sure, join with the Democrat in offering sincere sympathy to the sons, daughters and other relatives oft hospitable, benevolent, Mrs. Hickey, one of our county's first housekeepers.
