Description	:	Grandma always went by last name Kellogg Grandma (Irene) was 16 when she married Grandpa (Jay), he was 55. Their marriage was a very happy one despite the difference in ages. She was his 2nd wife. When he died at the age of seventy, grandma was pregnant. Grandpa had already made known his desire that each of his sixteen children were to have forty acres of his estate. She was his 2nd wife. When he died at the age of seventy, grandma was pregnant. Grandpa had already made known his desire that each of his sixteen children were to have forty acres of his estate. So his first family walked away with 360 acres of his large farm, leaving the balance to grandma and her children. This balance just happened to be the mortgaged part.(we don't think that's what grandpa intended for grandma ) All but two of the the first family quickly sold their land,and the mortgaged part that went to Grandma and her children it proved to be an extreme difficulty in the coming years. They found themselves thrust from a period of affluence into years of poverty and this occurred eleven years before the great depression. Impoverished by circumstances in the 1920's and 30's she was always rich in love, sympathy and understanding.Her two oldest sons, John and Jim, aged twelve and fourteen, found it necessary to leave school and did what they could to add to the family income. Grandma took in boarders to make ends meet, and somehow managed to keep the younger children in school. We remember grandma, in her 70's always taking us to the beach. She was a wonderful grandmother, bright, and strong who really loved life, and her family. Grandma died to soon, at the age of 90. We will never forget her, and will pass her stories to our children, and their children as long as we are able.
