Description	:	On Tuesday afternoon, August 25, at her home in the south part of town, Mrs. J. C. Bower peacefully closed her eyes and went to the rest for which she had so long prayed. On November 28, 1839, Margaret Isabel Arnold was born at Greencastle, Ind., at which place she lived till she was 8 years of age. In 1847 her father brought his family to the new west and settled near the present site of Albia, in Monroe county, Iowa. On November 28, 1839, Margaret Isabel Arnold was born at Greencastle, Ind., at which place she lived till she was 8 years of age. In 1847 her father brought his family to the new west and settled near the present site of Albia, in Monroe county, Iowa. Here she grew to womanhood and here on February 25, 1873, she became the wife of J. C. Bower. The young people continued to make Iowa their home till May, 1880, when they came to Nebraska and cast in their lot with the pioneers of Howard county, where they have since resided. Those who had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Bower intimately appreciated the sterling qualities of her character, some of which partook of the ruggedness of her Kentucky ancestors and of the influence of the pioneer surroundings of her childhood and early womanhood. She was hospitable and kind in her home and staunch and loyal in her friendships. She was a member of the Christian church, but there being no society of that denomination here she at different times worked heartily with both the Presbyterian and Methodist societies and showed forth in her life a Christianity broad enough to recognize the Christ-likeness in any church and in any creed. She possessed a ready sympathy for those in distress;a sympathy so wise that she never erred in showing it and so delicate that she never wounded the recipient in bestowing it. She was a faithful and devoted wife and mother, always considering the welfare of her loved ones before consulting the comfort of herself. The last time she was seen at a public gathering was at the commencement exercises seven years ago last May, upon which occasion her son was among the graduates. Even then she was very feeble, for the disease that terminated fatally a few days ago had already undermined her health, and after witnessing the exercises that placed her last child among the graduates of the St. Paul high school she returned to her home, feeling that her work was, in a measure, completed. Those who were admitted to her sick room during her protracted illness could not fail to learn a most wholesome lesson (of patience) from witnessing the fortitude with which the heavy affliction was borne, an affliction doubly hard to endure because of the natural energy and ambition of the sufferer. Ever anxious as to the comfort of those she loved, when convinced that recovery was impossible, she desired to go to rest, that she might relieve them of the burden of her care. But the tender thoughtfulness, the rare devotion of her family, proved that the care-taking was a labor of love. Such was the woman that has gone from us; gone so gladly to her reward. In the passing of Mrs. Bower the world has lost one who has made it better by her life. She rests from her labors, but her influence lives.
