Description	:	Margaret J. Coffin, 88, a long time resident of Leavenworth and the Wenatchee Valley, died on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at her home in Everett. She was born Margaret J. Derifield on July 20, 1918, in Malaga to Thomas and Mattie (Smith) Derifield. In 1922, the family moved to Leavenworth, where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Leavenworth High School in 1936. In 1948,... Read More	Margaret J. Coffin, 88, a long time resident of Leavenworth and the Wenatchee Valley, died on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at her home in Everett. She was born Margaret J. Derifield on July 20, 1918, in Malaga to Thomas and Mattie (Smith) Derifield. In 1922, the family moved to Leavenworth, where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Leavenworth High School in 1936. On March 22, 1937, she married Eugene "Shag" Coffin in Tacoma and they made their first home in Leavenworth, where Shag worked for the C.C.C.'s (Civilian Conservation Corps) until moving to Kelso in 1941. In 1948, they moved to Cashmere, where they purchased the old Cashmere Hotel and converted it into the Cashmere Rest Home. In 1955, they sold the rest home to the Dronen's and returned to Leavenworth, where they purchased Shelton's Tavern. Margaret and Shag divorced later in 1955, and she then managed the Club Tavern in Cashmere until her retirement in 1983. In 2005, she moved to Everett to make her home with her grandson, Monte. Margaret was a kind, loving and considerate mother who tried to make sure her children had a good Protestant Christian up bringing. All the children were baptized in the Methodist Church and were sent to Sunday school and church camps. Education was important to Margaret, she placed high values on education, she deprived herself, so that she could put her daughter, Pat and help her son, Ken through college. She made Ken promise to finish high school after the Navy, before she agreed to sign his enlistment forms in 1954. She also made a provision for a great-grandson to attend college, as he so wished. She was quick to forgive her family (her son's large and small sins, Ken's wanderings). Pat, her daughter was no different than others, she could do no wrong, she was pure. Margaret's favorite things to do were to visit the sick, the infirmed and bedridden, she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, she loved to lake fish, and her favorite charity was the Humane Society. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Kay Coffin of Leavenworth and Jack Coffin of Seattle; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 daughter, Patricia Hatmaker; 2 sisters, Dolly Schooler and Mildred Rydberg; and 3 brothers, Howard, Harvey and Harold "Bud" Derifield. A Graveside Service of Commemoration will be held on Friday afternoon, January 26, 2007, at 2 o'clock in the Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel in the Wenatchee City Cemetery, with Pastor John Clark, officiating. Those who wish, may make a memorial in her name to the Upper Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 2189, Leavenworth, WA. 98826; Alzheimer's Association, 12721 30th Ave. NE, #101, Seattle, WA 98125 or the Humane Society, P.O. Box 55, Wenatchee, WA 98807.
