On Tuesday, April 12, 2005, Margaret Clayton peacefully passed away at Eagle Cliff Manor in Billings. Margaret Kathleen (Mettler) Clayton was born Feb. 21, 1943, in Billings, the daughter of Ted and Pauline (Ruppel) Mettler. Margaret graduated from Billings Senior High in 1962, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps, in 1963. There, she met and married her husband, Harold Clayton, on June 7, 1963. They moved to San Mateo, Calif., where they lived and raised two sons, Tom and Joe. She is survived by her husband, Harold Clayton; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas (Debbie) Clayton of San Jose, Calif., and Joseph (Sondra) Clayton of Foster City Calif.; three grandchildren, Joe, Alison and Donovan. Also surviving are her mother, Pauline (Ruppel) Mettler; four sisters, Debris Taylor, Freda Lilly, Ruth Lackman and Eleanor Hem; two brothers, John and Ervin Mettler. Margaret had many nieces, nephews and cousins. One cousin, Violet Leikam, was a very special friend and like a sister to Margaret. She was preceded in death by her father, Theophil "Ted" Mettler, and a sister, Agnes. Margaret loved her job as a hostess for weddings and parties for 25 years. She will be remember for her arts and crafts, such as the mural she painted outside the gym at Billings Senior High School. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites.
