Description	:	Margaret LaVerle (Miller) Gage was born April 11, 1931, to Harry and Della (Mathis) Miller. She was their ninth child. Margaret died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the home of her son. Margaret lived and grew up in and around Elgin, Iowa, and West Union, Iowa. Read More	Margaret LaVerle (Miller) Gage was born April 11, 1931, to Harry and Della (Mathis) Miller. She was their ninth child. Margaret died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the home of her son. Margaret lived and grew up in and around Elgin, Iowa, and West Union, Iowa. She attended school at the Kern Hill School in Elgin, Castalia Public School and Rolling Green School, where she graduated from eighth grade. She graduated from West Union High School in 1948. After graduation she worked as a house keeper, was a secretary at a garage, and worked at a variety store and at restaurants in West Union and Hawkeye, Iowa. She first attended church at the Baptist Church in Elgin until her parents moved to the West Union area. Then they attended First Baptist Church. She was baptized May 19, 1943, and still is a member. Margaret married Elwood Gage July 19, 1952, in the First Baptist Church in West Union. They were the parents of six children, Steven, Marsha, Stanley, Stuart, Marie and Scott. They were married 51 years when Elwood passed away. She lived in Fayette County, Iowa, all her life. Oct. 31, 1958, they moved to Donnan, Iowa, where they purchased an acreage. When Elwood was injured on the railroad and became disabled, Margaret started to work at the Fayette County Care Facility which later became Prairie View. She had the honor of naming it. She worked there for 21 years, with 20 years as the laundry supervisor. She enjoyed working with the clients and after her retirement she became a volunteer. Margaret enjoyed her life and loved talking to people on the telephone. Even though she didn't go many places she kept in contact with family and friends through the telephone. She liked listening to KOEL and reading her much loved newspapers. She was so happy when her son Stan and his wife Ute bought the home place, because then she and her son Scott could stay there. She loved living in Donnan. Scott took very good care of her, that way she could stay in the country longer. She is survived by her children, Steven (Debby), Marsha, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Stanley (Ute) Elkader, Iowa; Stuart (Cheryl), Rochester; Marie (Rod Rema), Scott, Clermont, Iowa. Grandchildren Tammy, Tonia, Angela (Matt), Allison (Kevin), Christoph (Christine), Susan (Cory), Cynthia (Nick Torkelson) Carissa, Stuart II, AshLee (Chris Woods), Amber (Kyle), Jason (Sophia), Nicole, and Heather. Great-grandkids Ashley, Quentin, Jenna, Darrian, Devyn, Alexandria, Lyric, Blane, Chloe, Anna, Autumn, Austin, Kylee. One sister, Violet; sisters-in-law, Inez, Janice, Lena and Marge. Brothers-in-law, Merle and Arthur (Edna). Many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Elwood, parents Harry and Della, sisters Gertrude, Doris, Gladys, Cora LaVon, Shirley and June, brothers, Clifton and Clarence; two great-grandsons, Tommy Lee Kulish and William Fred Hauschild. Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left with www.leonardfuneralhomes.com. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in West Union, Iowa. Rev. Alfred "Rip" Baillargeon will officiate. Visitation: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday April 12, at the church, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
