Leu, 73, of rural Mt. Pleasant, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 1993, at her home. Born Dec. 20, 1919, in Canaan township of Henry County, she was the daughter of Perry C. and Louella M. Nickolaus Mathews. She married Paul W. Leu Sept. 26, 1946 at Fairfield. He died Aug. 19, 1970. She was a 1937 graduate of the Pleasant Lawn High School and received her B.A. degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1942. She had taught high school in several Iowa communities before becoming certifed to teach children with learning abilities. She retired in 1992. She was named the outstanding educator in America in 1973 and 1974. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Alpha Zee Delta and Delta Kappa Gamma where she was the historian for the Grinnell Chapter. Survivors include two sons, James Leu of Bolingbrook, Ill., and John Leu of North Bethesda, Md.; two daughters, Linda Holtschlag of Decatur, Ill., and Laurie Anderson of Dallas, Texas; four sisters, Shirley Madden of Olds, Ruth Bridges of Menden, Neb., Phyllis Mallams of rural Mount Pleasant, and Charlotte McClure, of Kansas City, Mo.; and four grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The funeral for Mrs. Leu will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Revs. Deborah Kiesey and Thomas Zeleny officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been setablished to create a hospice program in Henry County.
