Casteel was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Springville, Iowa, to her parents, Walter S. and Margaret E. Applegate-Casteel. She married Clarence E. Gombert on March 25, 1935, in Rockford, Ill. He died on Jan. 2, 1974.She was the bookkeeper and secretary at Buckhorn Creamery, where she met her husband. She had also worked at Cornelius Farm Store and Goetz Implement, Maquoketa. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Maquoketa, and had been a member of Union Presbyterian Church, Lost Nation. She loved to do crossword puzzles and play Scrabble, and she collected cat figurines and cups and saucers. She is survived by two daughters, Dianne (Mrs. Thomas) Rockwell of Maquoketa and Lana (Mrs. Ronald) Hellig of Lost Nation; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Clifford Casteel of Maquoketa.
