Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Donor's Choice. Margaret Welch was born September 21, 1911, in Butler County, Nebraska, to Louis and Ernestine (Rohrich) Brix. She was baptized in Gersig, Austria in 1913 and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek in 1934. Margaret attended District 44 and District 9 schools in Platte County and graduated from the eighth grade. She worked as a hired girl during threshing, butchering, and helping with the arrival of new babies. On February 28, 1933, Margaret was united in marriage to Charles J. Welch, Jr., at St. John's Church. They assisted his father Charles H. Welch, Sr. on the farm and in operating Welch's Community Hall until it closed in 1947. They farmed in the area until 1967, when they semi-retired on the family farm. Margaret raised chickens, milked cows, and had a large garden, which she shared with everyone. She belonged to the 20th Century Club (a group of neighbor ladies) and St. John's Ladies Aid until it dissolved. She enjoyed playing pitch, rummy, and watching game shows on T.V. She always sent birthday cards to her entire family. Margaret also enjoyed watching the news, reading the Telegram, and keeping up on the happenings of the farm. Margaret and Charles were presented the Nebraska Pioneer Award in 1973 for farms that have been in the same family for 100 years. Seven generations of Welches have now lived on the farm. Margaret's husband Charles passed away on September 25 1982. Family members took Margaret on many trips to see other relatives in Minnesota, Florida, Louisiana, and California. She continued to live on the family farm until she moved to Prairie Village in October of 2003, where she resided until July of 2011 when she entered Countryside Home in Madison. Margaret was the oldest member of St. John's Church for many years.
