A daughter of Frank and Mary (Steffes) Rupiper, she was born on April 14, 1910, near Roselle, Iowa. On Aug. 28, 1928, she married Matthew Hugeback at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. While living in Carroll, Iowa, they were members of Sts. Peter and Paul/Holy Spirit Church and St. Lawrence Church, where they celebrated their 50th, 55th, and 60th wedding anniversaries with their children and families. A daughter of Frank and Mary (Steffes) Rupiper, she was born on April 14, 1910, near Roselle, Iowa. On Aug. 28, 1928, she married Matthew Hugeback at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. While living in Carroll, Iowa, they were members of Sts. Peter and Paul/Holy Spirit Church and St. Lawrence Church, where they celebrated their 50th, 55th, and 60th wedding anniversaries with their children and families. After Matt died on Jan. 5, 1990, Margaret moved to Orchard View in Carroll, Iowa. In 2000, she moved to Wilmington, N.C., and resided at Lakeshore Commons Retirement Home near her youngest daughter, Susan Hugeback Hurst, and family. Margaret was a Grand Regent and District Deputy of the Catholic Daughters of America and later continued her involvement as an honorary member. She served as President of Holy Spirit Women's Guild and increased their membership to 950 women members. Margaret chaired the entertainment committee for the St. Anthony Nursing Home and participated in the Legion of Mary and the South West Deanery of Catholic Women. For 20 years she also volunteered for the Hospital Auxiliary and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Margaret loved playing the piano and singing. Most recently at her special hundredth birthday celebration she entertained for thirty minutes an audience of most of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were in attendance from all over the United States. She also enjoyed growing flowers, crocheting, and organizing celebratory events. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to two bridge clubs for many years. Margaret had an abiding love for her family, treasuring and encouraging each of them. She was strong in her faith and never hesitated to share it with her family and others. Survivors include one son, Romayne, and wife, Lorrie Hugeback, of Los Angeles, Calif.; four daughters, Inez Hugeback, of Sidney, Ohio, Vera Brosnahan, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Linda and husband, Richard Scott, of Sidney, Ohio/Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Susan and husband, Dick Hurst, of Wilmington, N.C.; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rita Rupiper of Carroll, Iowa. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Matt; a son, Harvey Hugeback, on Dec. 23, 1993; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hugeback, on April 20, 2010; a brother, Norbert Rupiper; a sister, Lucy Horbach, and husband, Nick; a sister, Genevieve Pietig, on May 7, 2010, and her husband, Louis; a special godson and nephew, Father Darrell Rupiper, OMI, on Feb. 10, 2009. A memorial celebration of Margaret's life will initially be held for her friends and family at Lakeshore Commons in Wilmington, N.C. On Dec. 27, 2010, Father Whyte will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Burial will be at the Fort Lauderdale Catholic Cemetery of Our Lady Queen of Heaven. Memorials in her name may be made to Hospice or a charity of your choosing.
