Robert Crawford, and mother of Irvine S. Crawford, and a native of Harrisonburg, who spent practically her entire life here, died unexpectedly at 5:50 Saturday afternoon at the Rockinpham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Crawford, who enjoyed good health for a person of her advanced years, had been suffering from a slight cold, but her condition had seemed improved. She became ill Friday night, and seriously ill Saturday morning. She was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon where her death a short time later came as a shock to both her family, and to her host of friends and acquaintances in and around Harrisonburg. A daughter of the late John Snyder and Josephine Swanson Snyder, she was born in Harrisonburg on November 20, 1875, where she spent her entire life except for a period of eight years, when she and her husband made their home in Coaesville, Pa. On June 30, 1896, she married J. Robert Crawford. Mr. Crawford, a popular Harrisonburg resident and blacksmith, preceeded her in death in June 1923. She is survived by one son, Irvine C. Crawford, of Harrisonburg; and six grandchildren, M.K. Crawford, of Houston, Texas; Mrs. John VanLear, of Virginia Beach; Robert S. Crawford, of San Antonio, Texas; and Don and Dick Hughes, of Coatesville, Pa.; James R. Crawford, of Harrisonburg; and four great grandchildren. The following sisters and brothers also survive: Mrs. J. N. Keckley, Ernest L. Snyder. Miss Nina Snyder, Mrs. C.P. Clarke, E.G. Snyder, and Mrs. Harry Heatwole, all of Harrisonburg and Mrs. Frank Vaughan, of Beaumont, Texas. A number of nieces and nephews also survive her. A son, Marshall K. Crawford, died on January 20, 1952; and one brother and one sister also preceeded her in death. Mrs. Crawford, a devoted wife and mother, and a loving sister, possessed a kind and friendly personality that won for her countless friends. She was one of the first thirteen original members of the Harrisonburg E.U.B Church; and also helped to organize the local chapter of the W.C.T.U. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock from her late residence 105 North Brook Ave., with her pastor, the Rev. James A. Swain in charge of the services, assisted by the Rev. Walter M. Lockett, Jr. Burial will be in the family lot in Woodbine cemetery. Active pallbearers will be O Franklin Landis, Joe C. Bowman, James A. Phalen, Layton A. Berry, Fred E. Layman and Sam B. Flagg. The body now rests at the Lindsey Funeral Home on South Main Street where it will remain until eight thirty o'clock Tuesday morning when it will be taken to her late home.
