State Herald Holyoke, Colorado Transcribed by Carol Moore December 1, 1916 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Margaret R. Patton was born on the 12th day of August 1835 at Monticello, Indiana, and died on Sunday November 26, 1916 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Josie Hill, near Haxtun, Colorado. In 1855 she was married to John A. Elston and to this union were born three children, two of whom died when small, the other, Mrs. Josie Hill, resides near Haxtun, Colorado. Mr. Elston died at their home in Indiana. In 1870 at Delphi, Indiana, she was united in marriage with Nelson Austin and to them was born one child, Frank Austin now residing in Sedgwick County, Colorado. The family resided for a time at Onarga, Illinois, moving from there to Benton County, Indiana, and from that home came to Colorado in February 1887, making their home on a homestead near Paoli, this county, where Mr. Austin died March 12, 1889. She made a large acquaintance in the county and especially among the early settlers. She was of a very sociable disposition and was always a very welcome guest in any home of her acquaintance and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. After her son, Frank, had a home of his own, she made her home with him and the balance of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Hill and her step daughter, Mrs. Gus Johnson. She was visiting relatives in Indiana when she suffered a stroke of paralysis. Her son Frank brought her back to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hill, where everything was done for her that could be done but she gradually grew weaker. She leaves to mourn her passing away, a daughter, Mrs. Josie Hill of Haxtun, a son, Frank Austin of Sedgwick County, three step daughters, Mrs. Gus Johnson of this county, Mrs. McVey of Holton, Louisiana, and Mrs. O.W. Daken of Casper, Wyoming, 16 grandchildren. She was the last of a family of ten brothers and sisters to pass away. The funeral services were conducted from the Christian church in Holyoke on Tuesday November 28, the pastor, Elizabeth Ware, preaching the sermon, to a large gathering of friends who came to pay their respects to the memory of one whom they held in high esteem. Beautiful floral decorations had been provided by friends. The body was laid to rest in the Holyoke cemetery.
