March 31, 1898 - Carroll Sentinel - Mrs. Margaret Guegel died at her home in this city yesterday morning. She has been in poor health for a long time. Her system gradually failed. For a number of years she has seen the darkest shades of life and it was remarkable that she did not give way long before she did under the burden that was placed upon her. She was a woman of great strength and had all the loving passions of a tender mother and her fidelity to her children tells of the better impulses that swayed her course of action. For the past three weeks she has been unconscious and when her son Alex Guegel returned about a week ago she did not recognise him. It seemed almost as if the irony of fate had decreed this, for it was her only thought to have him returned to her and when he did she was unconscious of the fact that her son, whom she fairly idolized, was again in her presence. The Guegel family was among the first settlers in the western part of this county and was one of the leading families in all that section of the country. They were successful in accumulating a fortune, but since the father died, a large amount of it has been dissipated. There is still quite an estate left to be divided among the children. The deceased was a devout Christian mother, a kind and loving neighbor and by her patience and meek humility won the esteem of all who knew her. Now that life's fleeting fever has passed the world cannot help but look with much respect on one who has been so devoted to those whom she loved with all the tender fondness of a mother. Her trials have ended and her mission on earth is over. As we look back over her sad life so full of sorrow and with so little sunshine during her declining years we are impressed with the thought that Mrs. Margaret Guegel has richly earned a crown, for during all her trials, she lived near the cross.
