After an illness of 17 years, of which time she was bedfast nearly ten years, Mrs. Margaret Van Lom passed away last Thursday morning, Jan. 16, at 8 o'clock, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. H. Eiting, in David City. She had a paralytic stroke ten years ago which left her practically helpless and her death was due to that. Mrs. Van Lom was the mother of twelve children, ten of whom are living. Those living are Mrs. Mary Eiting, Rinard Van Lom and Peter Van Lom of David City, Mrs. Helena Thornton of Falls City, Mrs. Elizabeth Rising of New York City, Henry Van Lom of Seattle, Wash., Andrew Van Lom of Omaha, Mrs. Margaret Posvar of Chambers, Mrs. Kathryn Anheuser of Omaha and Mrs. Cleo Watkins of Milwaukee, Wis. Two sons, William and Louis, died in childhood. Mrs. Van Lom leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bartmann, living in Appleton, Wis. For forty years Mrs. Van Lom had been a resident of Butler county, she coming here with her family in 1879 and locating in Center township. Her husband, Andrew Van Lom, passed on February 2, 1902, and Mrs. Van Lom continued her residence on the farm until her health completely failed her and she moved to David City nine years ago. She had been living in the Eiting home the past few years. A daughter of Henry and Helen Wolfe, Mrs. Van Lom was born in Cologne, Germany, April 30, 1850, and came to the United States when a young girl, locating in Appleton, Wis. It was at this place that her marriage to Mr. Van Lom took place on April 29, 1873, and it was from there that the Van Lom family moved to David City. During long residence in this county and through her noble characteristics and temperament Mrs. Van Lom had made an unusually large number of friends. She never spoke ill of anyone and no one spoke ill of her. She was ever a sacrificing mother, always striving to please her family and those she came in contact with. Funeral services for Mrs. Van Lom were held in St. Mary's Catholic church in David City at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, and were conducted by Rev. Father Boll. Burial was in St. Francis' Catholic cemetery in Center township, Rev. Father Colleran having charge of services at the grave. Three of Mrs. Van Lom's sons, Andrew, Rinard and Peter, and three sons-in-law, Fred W. Anheuser, Frank Posvar and C. W. Thornton, acted as pallbearers. Those coming from away to the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Thornton, of Falls City; Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Anheuser and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Van Lom, of Omaha; Frank Posvar and Peter Litjen, of Chambers; Miss Hattie Eiting, of Jefferson, Mo.; Hubert Simon, of Minden, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Schaaf, of Lincoln; Mrs. Max Elias, of Columbus. Mrs. Van Lom was an aunt of Mr. Litjen, Mrs. Elias and Mr. Simon. Illness prevented three of the Van Lom children from being present at the funeral. Mrs. Van Lom had been a lifelong member of the Catholic church.
