Description	:	After lighting the fire and preparing breakfast for herself and husband, last Thursday morning, July 17, Mrs. D. Holthus, nearly 78 years of age, sat in a chair to rest from her exertions and a few moments afterward died of heart failure. Mrs. Holthus was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, where she grew to womanhood and was married May 23, 1863 to D. Holthus. Read More	After lighting the fire and preparing breakfast for herself and husband, last Thursday morning, July 17, Mrs. D. Holthus, nearly 78 years of age, sat in a chair to rest from her exertions and a few moments afterward died of heart failure. Mrs. Holthus was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, where she grew to womanhood and was married May 23, 1863 to D. Holthus. In 1868 she emigrated to this country with her husband and located in Jackson county, IA. where they lived for two months. Then with John Frerichs and John Kuhlman, pioneers of this county, they came here, and located on their farm in the southwestern part of the county, she living with her husband on this place for 51 years. Mrs. Holthus was the mother of 10 children, 6 of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Mary Scheele, who lives in the state of Arkansas; Mrs. Minnie Ottemann, who lives near Johnson, NE. Mrs. Lena Behrends, Ernest Holthus, Dick Holthus, all of whom live in the vicinity of the Stone church, and Mrs. Margaret Behrends, who lives near Auburn, Ne. Mrs. Holthus was a good wife and mother, possessed of all the starling virtues of character that go to make a good Christian. She was loved by all who knew her. The funeral took place at the Lutheran church south of Johnson, Sunday morning. and the great assemblage of mourners who gathered to take part in the service could not all enter the doors. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Freuhling. NOTE: Diedrich and Margretha (Rabe) Holthus, along with daughter Louise and an unnamed infant, sailed to America aboard the ship UNION. The ship left Bremen, Germany, stopped at Southampton, England, then arrived in New york City June 20, 1868. The unnamed infant was Maria, their second child.
