Read More	Margret Merchen, 101, of Norris, SD, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the home of her daughter in CO. Margret Ellen Gibson Merchen was born April 29, 1908, in Cedar Rapids, NE to Mathew and Caroline (Thompson) Gibson. She passed away at her daughter Margret's home in CO on Monday, April 05, 2010, at the age of 101 years, 11 months, and 6 days. She married James Edward Merchen on April 25, 1934 in Martin, SD. Ten children were born to this union. She shared ownership of a Model T Ford with her sister, Nellie, before they married but she never drove it. She and her siblings moved to Bennett County in 1932. When her mother passed, she inherited the family organ and five head of cattle. After her marriage to Jim they lived on Spring Creek then moved three miles north of Vetal, SD. In May of 1942 she used her inheritance to purchase 320 acres at Blackpipe, SD where Margret and sons still farm & ranch. Margret and the children milked cows and fixed fence to keep the farm going while Jim worked road construction. She quit milking cows when she was 85. Their home burned down on the day before Valentine's Day in 1946 and Margret received sever burns on her arms and face, their twins Lawrence and Florence were injured in this accident also. In 1959 and 1960 Margret worked at Bennett County Hospital in the kitchen. She served on the school board of District 9 and on the election board for several years. She drove tractors and pickups around the farm to help move farm equipment from field to field but would never get a license to drive on the public highways. Said she didn't want those crazy drivers coming at her with no room to get out of their way. Margret and her sister Lillie continued to live on the farm after the death of James. She lost her sister Lillie in May of 2001. Margret fell on the stairs in her home in August 1995 and broke her hip. They replaced it with a plastic socket. She fully recovered her ability to walk, but six years later in January, 2002 she had the misfortune of falling and needed to replace the other hip joint and recovery was slow. She regained the ability to walk with the assistance of a walker but was not able to live alone so in September 2002 she went to Denver, CO to live with her daughters. She is survived by eight children; Frank (Jean), Margret Pike, James L. (Audrey) Lynn, Clayton (Sheila), Ralph (Susan), Lawrence (Christy), and Kathryn; two sisters-in-law Lucille Gibson and Isabel Merchen, one brother-in-law Bernard (Rebecca) Merchen, 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and five great-great-great-grandchildren all to mourn her passing. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James E. Merchen on February 1, 1983; her son Eldon on March 6, 1937; daughter Florence on May 4, 1962; great-granddaughter Alicia Renae Jones on February 25, 1994; two sons-in-law Gordon Pike Jr. in July, 1997, and Jack Duran in August, 1994. Her siblings Bessie heft, Carl, George, Lillie Bryan, Nellie Merchen and Chester. Her brothers and sisters-in-law; Wilbur Merchen, Orland Merchen, Hazel Powell, Mae Long, June Ralph and Iva Hillstrom.
