Another pioneer who since 1883, has left her indelible mark of labor and love upon the community she resided in has gone to her just reward and though her death was not unexpected, it has left a void that the sundering of the earthy tie brings to those connected, that times healing hand only can efface. Descended from that good old Saxon stock that for centuries has placed its mark in the advanced ranks in carrying Christian civilization forward, the deceased never knew a task too great for her undertaking no toil too severe to aid those surrounding her. Even when age with his co-workers of pan and illness attempted to call a halt on her active life, her regrets were greater to her enforced idleness, than to her bodily suffering. It is the passing of such lives into the great unknown, the realization of their labors for those around them, the appreciation of their influence upon the community, that teaches us to understand the full meaning of the words of the Great Master: "Well, done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the Kingdom of the Lord." Margretha (Nortman) Swantz Baker was born September 21st, 1835, in Saxony, German. She emigrated to America and settled in Jackson county Wisconsin, where in 1857 she was married to Henry Swantz. He heard the call of duty in the civil war and died at Atheus, Alabama, from disease contracted in service. One child Henry G. Swantz, survives this union and is living on land adjoining the homestead. March, 1865, she was married to John G. Baker who with four children, is left to regret her taking away, Julius W. Baker, Amelia A. (Baer) wife of Willet Laberee, Charles F. Baker and Emma S. (Baker) wife of Gustaf Miller. A brother Phillip Nortman, and a sister Mary Pepperkorn, both residing at Black River Falls, Wisconsin, are the only immediate blood relations of the deceased surviving. Services were held in the Congregation church; Rev. A. L. Curtis officiating. She was interred in the family lot in the Estelline cemetery near her son, Phillip Swantz, ho died in August, . D. The family so many, who have had a similar experience, regret, that it is only in the hour of misfortune, that one is able to appreciate to many unselfish and kind people about us. With life at its every day hum drum of existence and less knowing the depth of human sympathy and feeling of men for his fellow man. Sorrow and affliction place their black pall about us and lo the world about takes on a new appearance. Acts of kindness and love are showered upon us, selfishness and greed disappear until we are forced to admit, after all, it is a pretty good old world that we live in and have our being. The bereaved family are under personal obligations to a number of their friends for acts of kindness in their affliction and desire to return thanks for the many favors and courtesies extended especially to the ministers who officiated and the Congregational church choir.
