Born December 24, 1922 in Dillon County, SC, she was the fifth child of the late Daniel Murray Church and Bertie Letha Bryant Church (Hayes). After graduating from Lake View High School, Marguerite joined the war effort traveling to Mobile, Alabama to work in the shipyards during World War II. Marguerite chose to leave Mobile and join the Army Nurses Corp at the Baptist Hospital Nurses Program in Columbia, SC. Finishing her Registered Nurse’s degree in 1947 meant that she did not join the war effort since World War II had ended before her graduation. She was recruited by Dr. Johnson to start her RN career at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Hemingway, SC. One Sunday afternoon, a young gentleman from the Vox Community, came to the hospital to visit a sick friend. Mayo Altman caught the eye of a pretty Registered Nurse, Marguerite Church. They were married December 16, 1950, and Marguerite and Mayo moved to their home in the Vox Community. Mayo and Marguerite raised two children, Stephen Mayo and Mary Susanne, as Marguerite continued her career working at Johnson Memorial Hospital and Lower Florence County Hospital in Lake City, SC for over three decades. She was a consummate nurse, giving special care to many patients through her decades of nursing. As her son-in-law, Terry, came to know her better, he dubbed Marguerite “an angel on Earth”. She lived up to this reputation in all aspects of her life taking care of patients and family, with special doting given to her grandchildren, Michael and Stephen. Mayo and Marguerite celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in December 2000, about a year before Mayo’s death in 2001. After moving to the Vox Community, Marguerite became a dedicated member of the Vox Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many years as an active member of the United Methodist Women and enjoyed singing in the choir. Marguerite moved to Shadow Oaks, An Assisted Living Community of Aiken in May 2013. She became a favorite of the staff as she found ways to brighten everyone’s days. Preceding in death were husband, Mayo Altman; mother, Bertie Letha Bryant Church Hayes; father, Murray Church; brothers and sisters, Annie Belle Church Hayes, James Church, Lucille Church Thompson, Letha Bertie Church (infant), Daniel Church, Robert Lee Church, and Kate Church Elvington.
