Description	:	Mrs. Marguerite Irene Newberry, 73, 611 Avenue H, an organizer and leader of programs for senior citizens here died unexpectedly at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, shortly after being admitted to Sacred Heart hospital. Read More	Mrs. Marguerite Irene Newberry, 73, 611 Avenue H, an organizer and leader of programs for senior citizens here died unexpectedly at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, shortly after being admitted to Sacred Heart hospital. Mrs. Newberry had been stricken at her home with an apparent heart attack. Mrs. Newberry helped organize a Fort Madison Senior Citizens Council affiliated with the National Council Senior Citizens and was instrumental in the recent merger of men's and women's senior citizens groups of which she was recently elected president. In addition, she helped organize the current nutrition program for the elderly, a program of providing noon meals for senior citizens at the Fort Madison Student Center. Mrs. Newberry had received a special award from Gov. Robert Ray for her work with the Iowa Commission on Aging. In addition, Mrs. Newberry participated in fund-raising activities for the Fort Madison YMCA. She also served on the board of directors of the Lee County Mental Health Center. Mrs. Newberry was a member and past officer of the Fort Madison Unit No. 153 of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employes(sic). She was a member of the First United Methodist church, Rebekah Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, the White Shrine, the Business and Professional Woman's Club, the Soroptimist Club and the Elks lodge auxiliary. She was owner and operator of the former "Distinctive Decorators" here for 25 years. Mrs. Newberry was born July 6, 1901, at Farmington. She had lived in Fort Madison since 1918. On Oct. 14, 1921, at Keokuk, she was married to Ralph B. Newberry, who died in 1936. Surviving are two sons, Dale of Fort Madison and Frank of Burlington and 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Her parents were Charles Elmer and Mattie Mae Close Weiher. She was also preceded in death by her step mother, Lillie Weisbruch Weiher and a sister. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist church. The Rev. Lawrence Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Memorials are being established with the Heart Fund and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
