Coplen, 97, Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester, passed away at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at her residence, just shy of her 98th birthday. Marguerite was born on Oct. 10, 1913, in Eaton, Ohio, the daughter of Reuben J. and Mayme (Rinehart) Scheid. She moved with her parents to Rochester in 1927, and graduated from Rochester High School in 1931. After graduation, she attended Western College in Oxford, Ohio, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1935 and later received her teachers certificate from Ball State University. In February of 1938, in Rochester, she married James W. Coplen. He preceded her in death in July 1975. Marguerite taught junior high school English and math in Rochester from 1963 until 1970. After teaching, she became a world traveler and spent many years in Minnesota and Arizona. She became a resident of Arizona in 2007, but spent summers in Rochester at Wynnfield Crossing. She had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church and D.A.R. She enjoyed antiques, reading, bridge club, biking and earlier in life, enjoyed raising German shepherds. Survivors include her children, Susan and husband Tom Hess, of Kansas City, Mo., James and wife Ann Coplen, of Rochester, Minn., and William and wife Nedra Coplen, of Rochester; six grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Kara, Gretchen, Craig and Haley; and seven great-grandchildren, Drue, Bryn, Lara, Luke, Kyla, Samantha and Jacie. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert J. Scheid in 1984; and her daughter-in-law, Jill Coplen in 2003. Her family now begins the celebration of her long and fulfilling life with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Maurice Grindle officiating. Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private interment will take place at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester. Memorial contributions may be made to Wynnfield Crossing or Hope Hospice of Fulton County. Online condolences may be sent to [email protected]
