MARIA METZ HAS PASSED AWAY Interment Made In Edgewood Cemetery, Tuesday, May 29, 1917 Marie Adam Metz was born in Stark county, near Canton, Ohio, August 10, 1835, and died at her home in Aurora, Iowa, May 27, 1917, aged 81 years, 9 months, and 17 days. She spent her childhood days in Ohio moving from there to Freeport, Ill., where she was married to John Metz, June 17, 1851. To this union were born four children: Mrs. G.L. Weeks of Aurora, Iowa; Mrs. A.P. Blakeslee of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. A.D. Metz of Aurora,, Iowa; and Martha, who died October 29, 1897. Four sisters survive: Mrs. Lydia Ludy of Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mrs. Mattie Strunk of Garvin, Minn.; Mrs. Ann Spangler of Plainwell, Mich.; and Mrs. Lavina Lebert of Fitzgerald, Georgia; and two half-brothers, L.M. Adams of Rogers, Nebr.; and H.C. Adams of Sycamore, Nebr. Also five grand-children, seven great-grand-children, several nephews, and neices, with many friends and neighbors to mourn her loss. Grandma Metz, with her husband, moved from Freeport, Illinois, to "Yankee Settlement", now Edgewood, Iowa, in 1854, and in 1899 she was left a widow; selling her farm she and her son moved to Center Point where they lived a few months, then coming to Aurora, Iowa, their present home, February 21, 1900. She joined the Methodist Episcopal church in early life, and has been a true and faithful christian all these years. Being very conscientious, she would do nothing she thought to be wrong. Her pleasant words and inspiring looks, will be greatly missed, as she was a favorite among many. The home and foreign affairs were of interest to her, and she was a regular reader of the dailies, thus keeping up with the times till the last. Although Grandma had been in poor health for some time, death came to the community as a shock. Two weeks ago she was taken in her wheel chair to Mother's Day Service, which she greatly enjoyed. A few days later she attending the funeral of N.R. Miller, these services being the last two she honored with her presence. After having taken a drink of water from her daughter, she made a slight apology for the water dripping, and lay back and passed away with out a struggle. The remains were brought to Edgewood, Tuesday, for burial in the family lot in Edgewood cemetery, where short services were held. Rev. G.L. Heiserman, pastor of the Methodist church at Aurora had charge of the funeral services. Many of our oldest settlers remember the deceased as a good woman, having become acquainted with her while living in this community and were grieved to learn of her death. Contributor: jmb
