Maria Cathrina Wagner was born Feb. 11, 1893 in Langenfeld, Russia to George and Maria Barbara (Doll) Wagner. The family left Russia in 1899 and came to Mexico and on Jan. 1, 1900 moved to Russel, Kan. and in 1906 moved to the Froid community. On July 5, 1914 she was united in marriage to August Herman Eschenbacher. They established their home on August's homestead 12 miles east of Froid. They raised wheat and barley and in later years corn and had a big garden. They also raised black Aberdeen cattle, Hampshire pigs and leghorn chickens. In the winter, they supplied the town of Froid with eggs. They and their five living children survived the bitter cold winters, the long hot summers, the depression, the dry years and also the good and bountiful years. She is survived by two daughters, Louise Cooper of Culbertson and Helene Coolidge of Lewistown; two sons, Bernhard Eschenbacher of Sidney and August Eschenbacher Jr. of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 15 great great-grandchildren and two great great-great grandchildren.
