Read More	Sophia Black obituary, transcribed by Linda Pendarvis From The Burlingame (KS) Enterprise Thursday, May 17, 1906 “The Passing of Another Pioneer.” Another of life’s weary pilgrims has been called to her rest, one more of those who has written the early history of this country through long days and years of sore trial and privation, has gone to enjoy the reward for a life well spent, another aged mother, who in younger years bravely met the adverse conditions thrown in her path and, though alone, battled heroically in rearing to maturity the family given to her, has been called home. The death of Mrs. Sophia Black at the age of eighty-four years, closes a life of strange and varied experiences. She was born in sunny France on January 30, 1822. Her father, Pierre Joseph Greylingney, married Jeannie Francois Poivey, February 26, 1816, in the parish of Rouchamps, canton of Champagney, department of Haute Saone, France. Their children were Claude Antoine, Marie Rosa and Marie Frances. The last named was Mrs. Sophia Black, though how the name Sophia came does not appear in any of the French papers in possession of the family, possibly it was given by the people in whose family she was raised in later years. With her parents and elder brother and sister she came to America when between four and five years of age, first arriving at New Orleans. Shortly after their arrival in this country the family was stricken with yellow fever, the mother and sister Rosa succumbing to the dread disease. She then became the foster child of a family by the name of Tuston and with her brother went north to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. All trace of their father was lost, though there is a bare possibility that after all these years he may yet be located, at some town in Ohio. At the age of twenty she was married to Henry Sims at Pittsburgh, in 1842. Left a widow by his death with a little daughter, Jane, now Mrs. Abner Brink, of Patrick, Arkansas, she was later married to Thomas Black, December 13, 1848. Their children were Robert, now of near Admire, Lyon county, Marion, wife of Frank Burt, whose death occurred in 1895, Thomas, Jr., of this place, James R., of Cle Elm, Washington, William H., of Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. and Mrs. Black were numbered among the earliest settlers of this community, coming to Kansas in the spring of 1855. They settled on the west side of Dragoon Creek, southwest of this place, Holm Rice settling on the east side of the creek on the land now known as the county farm. When the government survey was made it was found that Mr. Rice and Mr. Black were on the same quarter section of land. Mr. Rice being first held the land and Mr. Black pre-empted land farther west, the farm now owned by his son, Thomas Black. Up the creek a short distance from the Black homestead is the farm pre-empted by John Smith in the early fifties (?) and still occupied by him. By the death of Mr. Black in 1861, Mrs. Black was left with five small children. The pioneer life with the husband’s support is not one of ease, and thus this little woman was given the added burden of facing the difficulties alone. How well she succeeded in those early days is borne out by the words of commendation from her old friends and neighbors. For some years Mrs. Black has lived with her daughter in Arkansas and with her son, Robert, in Lyon County. Filial devotion to an aged mother and the kindly ministrations of loving grandchildren gave her every possible comfort and happiness in her last years. Her death occurred at the home of her Robert on Wednesday night, May 9, at 12:00 o’clock, her sons, Thomas and Robert, and her daughter, Jane, being present at her bedside. Funeral services were held at the Robert Black home on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock. Burial services were held at 3:00 p.m., at the home of Thomas Black, of this place, Rev. C. E. Schalble officiating. The services were very largely attended by the old time friends and neighbors, an excellent funeral discourse was delivered and the many beautiful floral offerings were testimonies of the esteem with which she is held by the people of this community.
