He was the eldest son, born in 1816. There are indications that he, rather than August, nine years younger, was expected to succeed the father as proprietor of the family business. Although both sons were trained for the business, they appear to be more broadly educated than would have been required for that, their schooling included not only basic subjects, but also some philosophic and literary content as well. Both were fond of music and skilled in it. John Jacob with clarinet and August with flute. Both were excellent singers. As events were to show, both brothers developed a strong sense of concern for family and community, especially as expressed in relation to school and church. John Jacob was perhaps the more inclined to a practical and conservative outlook, suited to business in Germany but also fortunately adaptable to the later demands of farm life in Iowa. In 1839, John Jacob married Maria Magdalena Berger, a girl of Eichstetten. It is said that her family was not as prominent as that of Wahrer, but that she was a vivacious, dark-eyed beauty, "the Belle of the ball" in the town dances. Her letters to her children in later life show a good basic education and well-informed concern for her numerous children. It is said that she did not enjoy the romance or adventure of the voyage to Iowa or the early hard years there. Enroute, to help while away, the long and tedious days, John Jacob and others played and sang and organized shipboard amusements, but Maria had five young children to mind! She must have shared the courage and hardihood of the others, but life was not a picnic. Maria never did become fully adapted to Iowa life. In later years, she was often ill or indisposed. Arthur Ingersoll's recollection of her in 1900 was "bedfast". Maria's influence in the family was to be strongly religious and conservative. John Jacob undertook farming, although at the outset, he must have known little about it. It appears that he never worked as a tailor except to make a few pieces for his own family. No doubt he could see that the land was good and that he and his children could learn to work it. He began by hiring out near West Point to a farmer named, Rutter, "a hard master". For a time, when Keokuk was having some of it's streets with cobblestones, John Jacob worked there. It is said that sometimes on the weekends, he walked to West Point and back to look after his family. By these means, he earned enough money to buy a cow and some equipment, and in 1854, he began farming rented land near the new town of Charleston. After another year, he bought the "home place", some 100 acres, in Section 13, about a mile northeast of town.
