Maria Murray was born in Forge Row, Ebbw Vale; in the Parish of Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, South Wales on the 10 of November 1825. Died at Jamestown, Kansas, January 27, 1908. Her youth was spent in the beautiful valley of the Usk, at a time when Wales was torn by the dissensions of the reformers. Her father was a supporter of the Chartist Cause and she could recall many of the events of those turbulent times. After her marriage she lived in Ebbw Vale until 1879, when she rejoined her son who had preceded her to America. Arriving in this country, she resided on her farm south of Jamestown, Kansas, till 1902 when ill health forced her to relinquish the management of her affairs, since which time she has lived with her son's family. She was an invalid during the later years in her life, but bore the infirmities of age uncomplainingly. She was a woman of marked ability and intelligence, esteemed by her neighbors and loved by her family, to whom she had been the most devoted of mothers. Having been baptized into the church of England in infacy, she remained a member of that body - a true Christian throughout her life. Her body was interred at the Fairview cemetery on Tuesday, Jan. 28th. The Reverend Charles Maltas conducted the services of the Episcopal Church. One son, W.J. Ion, her only child survives her.
