The Deceased Had Been in Failing Health Since the Death of Her Husband Two Years Ago, Lived for Many Years in Johnson Township Mrs. Jacob Braun, a resident of Plymouth ffor the past forty one years, died at her home on Ninth Avenue, yesterday morning at half past nine, after a long illness. Mrs. Braun had been in poor health ever since the death of her husband, which took place two years ago last May. Although not confined to the house, and at times in apparently normal health, her death was due to a complication of illnesses. Mrs. Braun had been a resident of Plymouth county since 1881, when she came to this country as a bride. She was born at Etzinger, Germany, on October 22, 1853, and was sixty-nine years and one month old at the time of her death. She received her early education, attended school and grew up in her native place, her maiden name being Mary Schmidt. Jacob Braun, a well known farmer in his lifetime, in Johnson township, while on a visit to to his former home in Germany, met Miss Schmidt and after a short courtship she became his bride and came with him to Plymouth county and lived on a farm in Johnson township, where she ably assisted her husband in the farm work and in the care of her stepchildren and also in the upbringing of their own children. After some years on the farm they retired and came to LeMars which was their home since. Mrs. Braun's death is morned by her stepchildren, who are Peter Braun, of Johnson township, Mrs. Walter McLain, residing on a farm in Akron, Mrs. Alvin King of Smithland and their own children, Mrs, Ernest Attrill, of Johnson township, Mrs. Jerome Betsworth, of LeMars, Chris Braun, of Sioux City. She leaves a large number of grandchildren and other relatives. A stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Beaulieu, died seventeen (unreadable) gium. The funeral will be held on Saturday morning at St. Joseph church and the interment made in the St. Joseph cemetery beside the remains of her husband. Mrs. Braun was a devoted wife and mother, and spent her life in good works, ministering to the wants fo her hansband and children. She was a good neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand, and was highly respected by all in the community where she lived an honorable useful and long life. NOTE: Several errors are in this obituary. I believe Maria was born in Otzingen, Germany. I did find the family as passengers on the Belgenland from Antwerp to the US on 11 Sept 1885, not 1881. Their destination is listed as LeMars. The records can be located on Ancestry or Castle Garden. A marriage record is in the LeMars court house Book 2, Page 69. They may have also been married in Geramny before the trip. I also believe that Maria was previously married and some of the children are hers from an earlier marriage to ? Schmidt. Jacob was previously married to Catharina Ikenroth. Jacob's will states that the children are the issues of three marriages. JACOB BRAUN CALLED BY DEATH Mrs Jacob Braun, a resident of Ninth avenue West, formerly High street, for over twenty years, died there this morning at 9:15. Death was caused by old age. She was 69 years old, Oct. 22. Her husband died two years ago in May. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but the funeral will probably be held Saturday at St. Joseph's church. The body will be interred at St. Joseph's cemetery. Deceased is survived by Peter Braun, Mrs. Walter McClain, Mrs. Earnest Attrill, Mrs. Jerome Betsworth, Chris Braun of Sioux City, MRs Alvin King of Smithland, Iowa. One daughter, Mrs Mary Beaulieu died seventeen years ago. Deceased also leaves a number of brothers and sisters in Germany. Mrs. Braun, nee Mary Schmidt, was born in Nassau, Germany, and was married in her native land, and came to the United States in 1881. They came to LeMars right away and lived in this vicinity ever since. She was a member of the Catholic church. Mrs. Braun performed her duties as a mother and brought up her children according to the dictates of her faith.
