Description	:	VANCOUVER, Wash., June 15, Mrs. Marie Hathaway, widow of the late Marshall R. Hathaway, and a well-known and esteemed pioneer resident of Clark County, died at an early hour this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Gridley, in this city. Death was the result of the weaknesses incident to advanced age, and came quietly and without material suffering. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shubel Smith, and was born in Paris, N. Read More	VANCOUVER, Wash., June 15, Mrs. Marie Hathaway, widow of the late Marshall R. Hathaway, and a well-known and esteemed pioneer resident of Clark County, died at an early hour this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Gridley, in this city. Death was the result of the weaknesses incident to advanced age, and came quietly and without material suffering. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shubel Smith, and was born in Paris, N. Y., June 11, 1830. At the age of 3 years she was removed with her parents to Galena, Ind., where her youth was spent, and where she obtained her education. She married Marshall R. Hathaway December 27, 1848, and in the fall of 1851 started to cross the plains to the Oregon Country. They stopped for the winter in Sullivan County, Mo., where Mr. Hathaway taught school. In April, 1852, they joined Captain Johnson's train for the Oregon country. Reaching Portland November 10, 1852 having walked a large share of the way and many a weary mile actually carrying her little daughter, Mary, who died at Portland, December 6, 1852, at the age of 2 years. Her other children were Homer M. Hathaway, now deceased, formerly of Portland: Mrs. Hiram E. Allen, now a resident of Portand; H. Lewis Hathaway. Mrs. C. C. Gridley and Mrs. Charles B. Sears, all at present residents of Vancouver. They have left their names on the records of Clark County as the holders of a donation land claim near Ridgefield where they settled April 1, 1854. Her husband, true to his earlier inclination, again became a school teacher, teaching the first public school in Vancouver. During the Indian wars of 1855-6 Mrs. Hathaway suffered many hardships while her husband was Quartermaster in the Vancouver service at Fort Vancouver and the thrilling tales of those early days were always fresh in her mind and she could relate them in a way to interest the younger generation. During her lifetime deceased has been a member of the Presbyterian Church, even attending all its services last Sunday. She was also a member of Oneonta Rebekah Lodge, I.O.O.F., of this city.
