Description	:	Maria Sophia "Mary" Bartling, 95 Maria Sophia was born Sept. 4, 1897, in rural Herman, Nebraska. She grew up on the family farm near Herman and moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1937. She grew up on the family farm near Herman and moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1937. Mary operated the elevator at the former Stephens Building from 1937 until the elevator was automated in the 1950s. She worked at the former Woolworth’s Dime Store, now Dime Store Days on Sixth Street, and at Schwester’s Department Store until the late 1970’s. She lived at Arbor Manor in Fremont since 1983. Bartling was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont and was active in the women’s organizations and choir there. Bartling died Monday, March 22, 1993, at Arbor Manor in Fremont, Nebraska. Left to cherish her memory are two sisters-in-law, Edna Bartling of Fremont and Hulda Bartling of Hooper, NE. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be 3-8 pm Tuesday and 9am-9pm Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, and an hour before the service at the church. The funeral for Mary Bartling, 95, of Fremont will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Donald Levenhagen will officiate Thursday’s service. Memorials in her name may be given to the church.
