She was the daughter of Maria Taylor and Asher Woolman. She married Marshall Knight, son of Peter and Elizabeth Knight. Her daughter, Mary Bell Knight, born April 1, 1866 was married to Lindley Hartley on March 25, 1896. Maria Taylor Knight's mother Maria Taylor died one month after Maria was born. Maria Taylor Knight from the Salem Weekly News: April 29, 1920. Maria Taylor Knight, daughter of Asher and Maria Taylor Woolman, was born near Salem, Ohio January 9, 1831. She was the youngest of six children, the mother dying six weeks after her birth and she is the last of these brothers and sisters. Some time after the death of the mother, the father married again, and to this union were born six children, the half brothers and sisters now living being John A. Woolman of Salem, Iowa; Mrs. Robert Smith of Sibley, Iowa; Mrs. Martha W. Smith of Spokane, Washington. In 1842, the family moved from Ohio to Iowa, coming by boat to Ft. Madison, thence across the country to a place about four miles east of Salem, where they settled, breaking new ground, erecting their own log buildings, enduring all the experiences of the pioneers. They were strict Quakers and like most of the other early settlers of this community, strict adherents to their faith. May 14, 1854, Maria was married to Marshall Knight who had come here from Kingston, Ontario a few years before. Because the young people did not publish their banns and he married in the Quaker church, they were suspended from its services. A few months later they were invited to again come back into the church but they never accepted the invitation; and though helping in the support of the various churches, neither of them ever became a member of any other. Except for three months spent in Keokuk just after their marriage, all the rest of their lives was lived in Salem, always in the same house they bought soon after their return. They had four children, the oldest, Arpin H. dying at the age of 4 years in 1859; and the youngest, Katie, dying at the age of eight in 1881. Marshall Knight died November 39, 1895. Mrs. Knight died April 26 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. M. Hartley, with whom she had been spending the winter, having taken sick soon after going there last October, with ailments incident to extreme age. Besides this daughter, she leaves a son, O. N. Knight of Mt. Pleasant Iowa; and three grandchildren, Vera, Justine, and Knight Hartley. She was as good woman, loyal to her family, her friends, and the town in which she lived. She was a home loving woman and vitally interested in everything that stood for the betterment of the home. Funeral services Wednesday afternoon, April 28. Interment in east cemetery.
