Her funeral service was at 1:30 PM Monday, May 11th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial was in the Trinity Cemetery at Carthage. Marian Ardell was born May 3, 1922 at Carthage, South Dakota to Alex Wilbur and Lydia Bertina (Ohlson) Nelson. She grew up in Carthage and graduated from high school there. After earning a teaching certificate from General Beadle College in Madison, she taught in Pierre, Lake Norden, Argon and rural schools. During World War II, in between her teaching, she worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base. She married Byron Hanson at Carthage on November 18, 1951. They made their home in Carthage until moving to Huron in 1960. Marian worked at the Huron Middle School for twenty years, first as a teacher's aide, and then in the office, until her retirement in 1987. She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was involved in women's organizations, taught Sunday school, and played the piano and organ. Marian taught piano lessons for many years and accompanied students for music contests. She was also a den mother for Cub Scouts and a Brownie leader in addition to belonging to the P.T.A. Along with a number of other parents, Marian helped organize a support group for families with handicapped children. Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Anthony Hanson and his wife, Marge Holzer, of Aberdeen, and Susan Wollman and her husband, Philip, of Huron; four grandchildren, Jessi (Edward "Ted") Wilharm, of Vermillion, Teresa Hanson, of Denver, Colorado, Alex Wollman, of Huron, and Ruth Wollman, of Huron; three sisters-in-law, Lorelee Nelson, of Carthage, Arlis Hanson, of Madison, and Lois Johnson, of Flandreau; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Byron; her daughter, Ruth Ellen; her son, Jeffrey; her brothers, Verlyn Nelson, and Arlyn Ray Nelson in infancy.
