Although Mrs. Marshall, who died Sunday at the age of 86, won't be behind the Marshall's Pasties counter now, the small cafe she established in 1968 as a tribute to Grass Valley's founding fathers will remain. A Holy Rosary for Marie Agnes Marshall will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A high requiem Mass will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grass Valley. Internment will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Grass Valley. Mrs. Marshall, a widow who worked years as a Grass Valley waitress to save up enough money for the shop, wouldn't have it any other way, her daughters said Monday. With the help of locals, Mrs. Marshall perfected the pasty recipe that's still used at the store today. Though she wasn't Cornish, "she had many, many Cousin Jennys that stayed with her until she got it right," said Mrs. Marshall's daughter, Carrie Locks. "Cousin Jenny" and "Cousin Jack" were terms used to describe Cornish immigrants to Nevada County. Locks now owns the shop and runs it with the assistance of longtime employee Lorrie Reinhardt and several others. Mrs. Marshall, who grew up in Saratoga on the San Francisco Peninsula, established the shop with the assistance of a banker who helped consolidate loans and the cash she earned waitressing at the Bret Harte, The Owl, The Office and The Nugget restaurants. Mrs. Marshall's husband, George, died in 1960. "She was very, very kind to anyone who needed to eat," Locks said. "She'd help people and never expected anything in return," Throughout the years, Mrs. Marshall became known as "The Pasty Lady". Mrs. Marshall is survived by her children Brenda Phelan of Grass Valley, Susan and LeRoy Crowder of Grass Valley, and Marilyn and Bill Cozad of Rough and Ready; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Marshall; son, Leonard Edward; and daughter, Charlene Rae.
