Description	:	Marie Anderson was born in Shilling Mark, Sweden. Her parents were Andrew Anderson and Clara Peterson. She had three sisters,Carolene, Kysa, Mina, and one brother Nels. Shilling Mark, Sweden must have been close to the Norwegian border. When Marie was twenty years old she married Halvor Galgeholt and they lived in Setskogen, Norway. When Marie was twenty years old she married Halvor Galgeholt and they lived in Setskogen, Norway. In 1880 their first child Joseph was born. About a year and a half later she was expecting her second child. She was twenty two years old when they immigrated to America. The farm where they lived was so close to Sweden that the trees in the background were actually in Sweden. Apparently language wasn't a problem. We can only imagine what she was thinking when she left her native country and family, never to see them again. A young woman with a husband and a child and expecting another one. They had courage, no doubt about it. Marie had medical knowledge. She was a mid-wife. She delivered many babies in her life time. I was told that she delivered the first five of her son Joseph's children. The only one she didn't deliver was Russell. I'm sure she probably delivered several of her other grandchildren. When Joe's oldest children were born he was up in South Dakota on the Rosebud, so she had to travel quite a distance by horse and buggy to help out. Marie had ten children of her own, so it's easy to see how busy and full that her life must have been. My mother lived with her Grandparents Halvor and Marie for several years. She was living with them when Halvor died. I've often heard her talk about that sad day. She also mentioned how fast her Grandmother could walk. She said when Grandma went for a walk I had to run to keep up with her. She was a lady always ready to help others out and always ready to share whatever she could. My mothers first child Arthur was born in her Grandparents house in Maskell. Halvor and Marie's daughter Hilda lived with them so Marie wasn't alone after her husband passed away. They lived in their home for approximately seven more years. By this time her two youngest sons Henry and Arnold were moving to California and they took Marie and Hilda along. Another adventure for this elderly courageous woman. I'm sure they all went through some extremely difficult times on this west coast adventure. My mother ( Edna Johnson Sherman ) talked about how broken hearted she was when her Grandmother Marie left for California. To her she had been a mother and a grandmother. She feared that she would never see her beloved Grandmother again, and her fear turned out to be correct. In 1939 Marie passed away in Rosemond, California. Her body was shipped back to Maskell, Nebraska where she was buried on December 4, 1939. This courageous lady, immigrant, pioneer, homesteader, midwife, mother, and grandmother was missed greatly by her family and friends. She lived a full, hard and challenging life. Made the best out of whatever she had. I'm very proud to be one of her descendants. Adrian W. Sherman
