Behlers died at her home in this city last Saturday evening at half past seven o'clock, and her passing marks the close of the life of another of the oldest citizens of this part of Cuming county. She had been an invalid for the last five years having fallen down a flight of steps in her home at that time sustaining injuries and a shock to her nervous system from which she never recovered, but steadily declined in health. The end came at last as the result of an attack of pneumonia which developed only two days before her death. The funeral took place last Tuesday from the Christus German Lutheran church, the services being conducted by Rev. A. Ollendorf, a former long-time pastor of this church, who came from Hooper to perform these last rites for his old friend and parishioner. The services were largely attended, attesting the high esteem of the community for the life and character of the deceased. The body was laid to rest in the family plat in the Wisner Cemetery. The pallbearers were Michael and James McNamara, M. A. Nye, D. Spearing, William Breeze and Peter Witt. Marie Elizabeth Schwemer was born at Quickborn, Hanover, Germany August 20, 1840, attaining to the age of 75 years, 5 months and 15 days. She came to America in 1864, settling at Chicago, and was there married to Mr. Behlers February 7, 1866. It will be noted that last Monday would have rounded out the span of fifty years of their married life. On March 13, 1879, they arrived here to make a home on the wide prairies of Nebraska, and located on Plum Creek, in Grant Township northeast of Wisner. The first years were filled full of hardships and called for great self-denial on their part, but their hearts were brave and their hands willing, and thrift and industry finally crowned their labors with success and plenty. They retired in the spring of 1902 to a well-earned rest, making their home in Wisner. Mrs. Behlers was the mother of ten children, five of whom are living. They are Mrs. C. H. Timberman of Huron, S.D.; Mrs. Margaretta McKown of Wisner; Mrs. Charles Finch of Delano, Cal.; Charles F. Behlers, on the old homestead in Grant Township, and Mrs. Katherine Rehpohl of Hitchcock, S.D. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Katie Behlers of Wisner. The sincere sympathy of all goes out to these grief-stricken mourners, upon the loss of her who had been a devoted and faithful wife, a loving mother and an affectionate sister. Mrs. Behlers was universally esteemed as a friend and neighbor. The hospitality of her home was hearty and the geniality of its hostess was sincere and unfeigned. She enjoyed the companionship of her friends, and they naturally formed a wide circle, who are glad to testify to her virtues as a woman of kind heart, neighborly generosity and warm friendships. They were grieved to see her last years clouded by illness and suffering, and now unite with her loved ones in their sorrow.
