Burial in West Union Cemetery Marie Hazel Jacobsen, daughter of James and Hazel (Musser) Jacobsen, was born July 28, 1918 on a farm near West Union, Iowa. She attended school in West Union and graduated in the class of 1936. She attended summer school and graduated from Upper Iowa University. She furthered her education by taking graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa. Marie taught school, in various positions, for 42 years, retiring in 1980 as a third grade teacher at the West Union Elementary School. Conservation, nature study and writing were among her interests and priorities. For many years, Marie was a member of the Iowa Poetry Association and received annual publication of poems in Lyrical Iowa. Promoting "Operation Christmas Child" was a community commitment in recent years. She believed every Christian is called to minister the Gospel. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and in other capacities. Marie's death occurred on June 3, 2009 in her home at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her parents. Those left to cherish her memory are her brother, Charles and his wife, Dolores Jacobsen of West Union; her niece, seven nephews and spouses, Karen (Victor) Schmitz, Kendall and Kyle Jacobsen, all of West Union, Kevin (Linda) Jacobsen of St. Charles, MO, Kirk (Dawn) Jacobsen, Kerry (Lisa) Jacobsen, all of Clermont, Kory (Erin) Jacobsen of Ridgeway, Kalen (Kathleen) Jacobsen of Walford and nineteen great nieces and nephews.
