A prayer service for family and friends will be held Saturday at 12PM at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center with interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. Read More	Marie Wallinga, 89, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Baxter, Minnesota. Marie Helen (Leamer) Wallinga was born at home on October 17, 1921 in Sibley, Iowa as the youngest child of Howard Scott Leamer and Emma (Just) Leamer. She died on January 8, 2011 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Baxter, MN, two years after she moved to be closer to family. Elementary school years were spent in Sibley, Sheldon, and Mason City, Iowa. Marie graduated from Hull High School in 1938 and her proud alma mater, the University of Iowa in Iowa City, in 1942, with a degree in Commerce Education. She taught High School Business and English courses in both Manilla and Clarinda, Iowa. After a 3 ½ year long distant courtship, she married Merrill Henry Wallinga on November 11, 1943 at her family home in Hull, Iowa. From 1944 – 1947 they moved from Keokuk, Iowa to Kansas City, Missouri to Manhattan, Kansas and on to St. Joseph, Missouri while Merrill was in the service. They settled into a Veterinary practice in Cedar Rapids for 3 years before moving to Sioux Center to start a new practice. She was instrumental in setting up, organizing, and running this new business for her husband. They were married 62 years prior to his death. Marie was a long time member of Central Reformed Church, local and regional library boards, The State Library Commission for eight years, American Legion Auxiliary, and Women's Club. She was a voracious nonfiction reader, passionate about literacy and public libraries, dedicated to church circles and Bible study groups, enjoyed doing needlework, and thoroughly delighted traveling to places around the world. She remained a strong, proud Democrat. As a mother, she expected us to be religious, educated, industrious, resilient, and independent women. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands: Merry Lynn and Jim Roelofs of Baxter, Minnesota and Charlotte and Bill Long of Watkinsville, Georgia; grandchildren include Ann (Frank) Kaim, Laura (Kip) Lynk, Mark Roelofs, and William Long as well as four great grandchildren, Eva and Riley Kaim and Kyan and Mya Lynk. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Mildred; brother Dwain; and great grandson, Ty Christopher Lynk. (Source: Memorial Funeral Home)
