If anyone believes in me, even though he die, he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Come to me all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Let us worship God. Almighty God, whose love never fails and who can turn the shadow of death into daybreak: help us to receive your word with believing hearts out of darkness into the light and peace of your presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture: Psalm 23 John 14: 1-7 I cor. 15 Lyle Schaller suggests that instead of looking at our lives as one, long continuous event, we look at our life as a series of chapters combining to make our book of life. As I reflected on Marie's life, I found five chapters in the book of her life. The chapter of childhood began Marie's life. With five brothers and one sister there must not have been a moment's quiet in the Younkin household! It must have been a hectic, but fun time. Nonetheless, these were the formative years which shaped the whole of Marie's life. Life in Huron in the 1920's would have been very different from any other time in Marie's life. From city life of the Roaring 20's, Marie moved into the next chapter of life. That was marriage and family during the Great Depression. She and Alfred built a home and raised a family. This must have required considerable adjustment for Marie. Life was hard on a farm in those years. The birth of eight children meant added work and responsibility. This was also a time of forming new friendships and building the foundations for later years. Following the Depression and war years, the Sutton Family moved to Wessington. There Marie completed her chapter as mother and wife. Alfred's death in 1963 marked the beginning of yet another chapter in Marie's life. After doing various other things, Marie finally opened an antique shop in St. Lawrence. She really enjoyed this chapter. People came from all over the country to do business at her country store. She found satisfaction in making doll clothes and some toys. But, most of all, she enjoyed the friendships developed, the conversations shared. I think Marie would call these her golden years because they were more relaxed and problem free. Marie has a chapter in her life called "Grandmother". Terry has shared what Grandmother means to her. Charle's children wanted this poem shared as an expression of how they felt about Marie: To Grandma I remember a child Sitting on Grandma's knee But look how the years have flown For that child was me. The cookies and the candy And boxes filled with toys. A trip to Grandma's house Was a trip with endless joys. The paleness of her fragile skin The gentleness of her touch The way she used to laugh and sing Are the things I miss so much. I can't say good-bye, Grandma, It hurts to let you go. I wish I could have told you That I love you so. A part of me is missing Now that you are gone. I'll do my best to make you proud To end the tears and carry on. Marie's life: childhood, marriage and family, widow and business woman, grandmother. All times filled with love, friendship, precious memories. The fifth chapter of Marie's life really flows through the other four as well as becoming the fifth chapter. Marie was a daughter of God. God created this world in which we move and have our being. God also created Marie and watched over her as a Father does his children. In this life, Marie knew God's love only in imperfect ways. She saw, as Paul said, in a mirror darkly. But now, she sees face to face. Now she is God's daughter in all the fullness that entails. Now she knows, really knows, God's love in all its completeness. One poet describes this chapter of Marie's life in this way: God's boundless Love and arching sky Above us when we wake or sleep, Above us when we smile or weep Above us when we live or die. God's patient Love. Misunderstood By hearts that suffer in the night. Doubted--yet waiting till Heaven's light Shall show how all things work for good. God's mighty Love! On Calvary's height, Suffering to save us from our sin, To bring the Heavenly Kingdom in, And fill our lives with joy and light. God's endless Love! What will it be When earthly shadows flee away, For all eternity's bright day The unfolding of that Love to see! Heavy sorrow is lifted because we know that Marie has seen the full unfolding of God's Love. And, each of us shall see it, also. For "lo, I tell you a mystery...we shall all be changed...For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable and the mortal put on imortality..." God's mighty love! God's endless love! It never deserts us. It never betrays us. God's everlasting arms are there, holding us, supporting us, loving us, whether we live or die. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory.
