Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 20, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid, Iowa. Marie was born on May 9, 1916, daughter of William and Katherine (Scherrman) Griffin, of Farley. She married Francis L. McDermott on Aug. 1, 1939, at St. Joseph Church in Farley; he preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 2006. She attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque and worked at Montgomery Ward for many years. She was a pianist, seamstress and longtime Mother's Club and Bridge Club member. Marie will be sadly missed. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Her smile and laughter were a joy to all. Surviving are her two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Maureen) Stevenson, of Boulder, Colo., and Mrs. Urban (Patricia) Haas, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Gene (Janice) Ernster, of Bettendorf, Iowa; her parents; two brothers, Leo and Frank; and two sisters, Florence and Irene.
