There she was in charge of the cattle and other livestock. She was working with a corn sheller, when it becamed jammed and when she tried to fix it, it pulled her fingers in and crushed them. The people for whom she was working for did nothing to help her, so she was in pain, until her mother found out and came and got her. Her fingers never did heal right and or very long time bone splinters would work their way out of her hand. She said that was the most painful. She did go to work for another couple and her mother made sure they were a lot nicer and they were. She never went to high school and always worked. She met Karel Dvorak in Czechoslovkia and when he immigrated to the United States, he promised to send for her. It took awhile with him and his brother finding work on farm in North Dakota, before finding out about packing houses in Omaha. They both found work there and when he had enough, he sent for Marie. She traveled by herself to the East Coast of the States, then by train to Omaha, Nebraska, where she stayed with a couple that Karel knew. Within the week of her arrival they were married at the Douglas County Court House. They made their live in South Omaha, not to far from the Novonty's (One of their sons would marrry one of the Dvoraks daughters). The first 3 children were born in Omaha, when Karel, a farmer at heart, wanted to farm out North East. The first moved to Rogers, Nebraska then later on to Colfax County near Dodge. Marie helped and but mainly kept the home and made many delicious meals. She refused to learn speak English, but learned enough to pass her naturalizion test. By time the grandkids came along, they all knew Czech, but after that not so much. It be she would speak at us in Czech, then we look to Gradma Novotny or Charlie to translate. She stayed on the farm for awhile after Karl's passing, but with the help of her oldest child Charles, they maintained the farm. They both then moved into Schyuler. She would grow a huge garden and can the proceeds of it to help get the family through the winters. It was from her that we all learned how to make pork roast & dumpling and saurkraut and most of us Kolaches. She is missed
