Abie, Jan. 24 - Funeral services for Mrs. Vaclav Svoboda, who died Sunday afternoon from paralysis at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert French near Schuyler, were held Wednesday morning, Jan. 19, at 9:30 from St. Mary's Catholic church, Schuyler, with Rev. Victor Herman officiating. Burial was in the Abie cemetery, where Rev. Alcuin Kasny conducted the burial rites. The pallbearers were Ernest Humlicek, Victor Humlicek, Valerian Svoboda, Milo Rebak, Raymond Warner and Anton Nesladek, grandsons of the deceased. Mrs. Svoboda was 74 years, nine months and 17 days of age at time of her death. She had ben in failing health from a stroke of paralysis the past 14 years. Mary Vodak was her maiden name. She was born near Slatina, Czechoslovakia, March 29, 1863, coming to America with her parents when she was seven years old. They settled on a farm near Linwood where they lived until April 1, 1918, when Mr. and Mrs. Svoboda moved to Schuyler, where they made their home until August 1, 1937, when Mrs. Svoboda was bed-stricken, and due to the infirmities of old age, Mr. and Mrs. Svoboda made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Albert French eight miles northwest of Schuyler. To Mr. and Mrs. Svoboda nine children were born. The husband and following children survive: James Svoboda of Weston, Frank Svoboda of Bruno, Jerry Svoboda and Emil Svoboda of Schuyler, Mrs. Charles Steffen of Fremont, Mrs. James Humlicek of Decatur and Mrs. Albert French of Schuyler. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Joe Pavel of Abie, and 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren to mourn her death. Two children preceded their mother in death, Tersa, who passed away Nov. 10, 1900, and Joe, who passed away October 13, 1937. Mrs. Svoboda had a kind and pleasing personality and in spite of her long years of suffering, was always ready to lend a helping hand where needed.
